There are also specific compatibilities outside of the '800 MHz, FB-DIMM, DDR2 ECC etc etc.' When Apple brought out the 8-core MacPro in 2007, the RAM manufacturers, Kingston included, had to go back and make technology changes to make their RAM compatible -- the RAM that was compatible with the 4-core did not work in the 8-core. Apple Mac Pro 3,1 2008 16GB 4x 4GB PC2-6400F 800MHz ECC FB-DIMM Samsung Memory Samsung 16GB (4x4GB) PC2 6400F. These are 800MHz PC2 6400F -- not slower 667MHz PC2 5300F.

What do you think? I know VISTA-32bit only uses 3GB MAX, adding anymore is worthless but on my Mac Pro I'm about to get 16gb of RAM, anyone know if Mac Pros will use the full 16gb of ram? It is very costly for ECC Ram, if you get Vista Ultimate 64bit you can support 8GB Ram with The intel 5400 chipset. You can get a motherboard to suite dual Quad Core CPU's.

Intel® Desktop Board D5400XS 2 x QX9775 3.20 GHz 12MB L2 FSB 1600 MHz 8GB FBDIMM DDR2 800MHz ECC or Non ECC Nvidia SLI 2 x Nvidia 9800 GX2 HDD: Either stay with Sata II or get a SCSI PCI-E Controller card and SCSI Hard Drives (IBM would be the go with IBM Ultra320 SCSI PCIe controller and IBM or Seagate U320 146GB Hard Drive or similar). If you get all this costed, It wouldn't be to far of an Mac Pro, but with alot more usuability.

Hard to say how stable it may be, it would be crucial to get approved hardware to suite the Intel Motherboard. Some of this stuff is server level especially U320 SCSI hard drives But all depends what you are going to use this computer for? You could get all this for a gaming computer.it wouldnt make much difference to a computer with a single quad core 4gb ram for todays games.

I had to price the above (Prices all based from local suppliers) Intel® Desktop Board D5400XS $882.20 2 x QX9775 3.20 GHz 12MB L2 FSB 1600 MHz $1,942.50 each $3,885.00 2 x 4GB (2X2GB) 800MHz DDR2 PC6400 Non-ECC CL5 $629 each kit $1,258.00 Nvidia SLI 2 x Asus Nvidia 9800 GX2 $755.80 each $1,511.60 IBM Ultra320 PCIe Controller $205.50 2 x Seagate U320 146GB Hard Drive ST3146855LW 15kRPM $368.50 each $737.00 Thermaltake VH6001BWS $257.10 LG 4x GBW-H10NB Blu-Ray DVD-RW Writer $649.00 Windows VISTA Ultimate (64bit Single OEM) $269.00 Total $9,654.40. I heard from various places you can stick in normal non-ECC ram in the Mac PRO, is this true? Normal non-ECC RAM these days are pretty good, They are totally different types, the FB DIMM uses a serial buss type interface to move data to and from the the memory controller.

Whilst it uses standard DDR RAM chips the modules use an AMB chip to serialize the data and interface to the mainboard chipset. The other issue is the keyways in the socket are different so you don't slot the wrong DIMM into the wrong socket. Also see OWC for pricing great service as well and with the AU$ at 93c ish. As someone above worked out, the total price of a PC counterpart totalling near $10k. You can pickup a 8core 2.8ghz apple workstation with 2gb ecc-ram, 8800gt for $5k and believe it or not it would only cost $3500 if u were a uni student with Apple developer subscription ($99 to buy). Intel® Desktop Board D5400XS $882.20 2 x QX9775 3.20 GHz 12MB L2 FSB 1600 MHz $1,942.50 each $3,885.00 2 x 4GB (2X2GB) 800MHz DDR2 PC6400 Non-ECC CL5 $629 each kit $1,258.00 Nvidia SLI 2 x Asus Nvidia 9800 GX2 $755.80 each $1,511.60 IBM Ultra320 PCIe Controller $205.50 2 x Seagate U320 146GB Hard Drive ST3146855LW 15kRPM $368.50 each $737.00 Thermaltake VH6001BWS $257.10 LG 4x GBW-H10NB Blu-Ray DVD-RW Writer $649.00 Windows VISTA Ultimate (64bit Single OEM) $269.00 Total $9,654.40 With three major difference with the above PC (Skulltrail) and a Mac Pro.

1) 9800GX2 - Quad SLi. This is massive graphics processing power you cannot get on a Mac, it's like running four Quadro FX5600 - which is a gobsmacking $4k for each card on the Apple website.

The other advantage above is you can run ATi Quad-Crossfire instead of nvidia Quad SLi such as two 1GB 3870 x2. 2) You cannot get BluRay on Mac Pro. 3) The Skulltrail PC above allows tweaking and overclocking, you can run all 8 cores @ 4Ghz quite easily, which for a Mac Pro to match would need 12 to 16 cores. Here is a good read: I heard from various places you can stick in normal non-ECC ram in the Mac PRO, is this true? Normal non-ECC RAM these days are pretty good, I doubt there is a need for ECC ram unless one requires it for critical apps that cannot crash/reboot from faulty memory. On a desktop machine, ECC Fully Buffered RAM isn't needed. Apple haven't used this type of RAM before, and Mac users have done fine without it (so have hundreds of millions of PC users).

Memory errors is very rare. Apple wanted to avoid using mainstream Desktop PC components to give them the greatest control over hardware - I believe they've made the Mac Pro only operable with expensive FB-Dimms. The Anandtec article I linked above talk about Fully Buffered DIMM: An Unnecessary Requirement. Worth a read. They verify your identity to avoid people getting ripped off. Hardly unreasonable. That's their problem not mine.

I buy from whom they give the best service at the best price, without the unnecessary hassles. I am not going to give away more details than what is normally acceptable, it may be safe for them, but not for me - I don't know what may happen with those. OmniTechnologies offer the same service at a cheaper price and with a straightforward transaction, goods were knocking on my door 3 days later. Cannot complain.
